Habsburg Madrid
Walk the old Habsburg heart of Madrid on foot, from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor to the Royal Palace and Plaza de Oriente.
The Madrid of the Austrias is the city's oldest core, the part the Habsburg dynasty turned into a capital from the 16th century onward. Over roughly two and a half hours we walk its cobbled streets, its arcaded squares and its granite corners to see how a modest town ended up ruling half the world. We keep groups small and skip the megaphones, so you can ask whatever you like and actually hear the answers.
It works well if it's your first time in Madrid and you want to get your bearings, because we start at Puerta del Sol, the exact centre of Spain, and everything else falls into place from there. It's also a good fit for families: the route is flat and the stories of kings, plots and markets keep younger walkers curious. And if you genuinely love history, there is plenty here, with an anecdote hiding on almost every corner.
Along the way you will see Plaza Mayor, the San Miguel Market, Plaza de la Villa, the Almudena Cathedral, the Royal Palace and Plaza de Oriente, among other spots. This is a free tour: you book your place at no cost and, at the end, you decide what the experience was worth with a voluntary contribution (on average, between 15 and 20 euros per person). No ticket booth and no surprises: if you enjoyed it, you give what feels fair.

“A really big shout out to Pera who not only is an architect and a historian himself, but a proper actor. He took us through an incredibly informative tour and delivered some of the most dramatic stories with proper theater experience. If I can book other tours, I'll be sure to request him.”
“Truly enjoyed our time with Luke yesterday! We had a fantastic Free Walking Tour with him in Barcelona. He guided us through Passeig de Gràcia, showed us some of Gaudí’s most famous houses, and shared fascinating insights about the history and architecture behind each site. The tour also included the incredible Sagrada Família, and Luke's knowledge helped us appreciate its significance on a much deeper level. He was engaging, friendly, and extremely well-informed throughout the tour. He brought the history of Barcelona to life with interesting stories and details that we would have otherwise missed. Would definitely recommend Luke to anyone visiting Barcelona who wants an informative and enjoyable introduction to the city's landmarks and culture. Gracias!”
“We were in for two days visiting my brother who is currently studying here. We had a few hours spare so my brother found these walking tours. We didn't really know what to expect but it was brilliant. Our tour guide was Andreas for the Gaudi tour. He was genuinely nice, engaging and knowledgeable. We had a really good time and learnt so much. The tour did not feel as long as it did, the time flew by. 10/10.would recommend the tour with Andreas.”
“I absolutely love it when people are passionate, enthusiatic and knowledgable about what they do and this tour was no exception! Luke was lovely, genuine and answered all of our groups questions. I feel like I have gone away knowing alot more about Gaudi and the beautiful architectural history that has captured the curiousity and hearts of so many of those that visit Barcelona. I would highly recommend this tour to those visiting and send my thanks and gratitude for Luke for creating such a beautiful experience for our group. Another thing to note is Luke is also English, which is great for those wanting to learn English or have an experience with a clear English translation”
