Medieval Madrid
Trace medieval Madrid on foot, from the Arab wall to Las Vistillas and a sunset at the Temple of Debod.
Medieval Madrid takes you back to the walled town that existed long before the royal palaces, when this was a small Muslim fortress guarding the road to Toledo. Over about two and a half hours we look for the traces the Middle Ages left behind, from the remains of the Arab wall to old churches and viewpoints over the river. We walk in small groups and without megaphones, so the stories of frontier towns and legends are easy to follow.
It works well if you have already seen the postcard Madrid and want the older, quieter layer underneath, the one most visitors miss. It suits history lovers who enjoy piecing a place together from its stones, and it is calm enough for families who don't mind a couple of gentle slopes. Coming at the right time of day, it also ends with one of the best sunsets in the city.
Along the way you will see the Arab wall on the Cuesta de la Vega, Plaza de la Villa, the church of San Nicolás de los Servitas, the Las Vistillas gardens, the Sabatini gardens and, to finish, the Temple of Debod at sunset. This is a free tour: you book your place at no cost and, at the end, you leave a voluntary contribution based on how much you enjoyed it (on average, between 15 and 20 euros per person). No ticket and no fixed price: you decide what it was worth.

Frequently asked questions
Is the free tour really free?
Booking your spot costs nothing. At the end you leave a voluntary contribution based on how much you enjoyed the walk; on average, between 15 and 20 euros per person. It isn't a fixed price or a ticket, it's your way of valuing the guide's work.
How long is the tour?
About 2 hours and 30 minutes at a relaxed pace, with a few gentle slopes and several viewpoints. We time it so the last stop lands around sunset.
What language is the tour in?
This route runs in English only, so it's a good fit for international visitors who want the full story of medieval Madrid in English.
Do we really finish at sunset by the Temple of Debod?
That's the plan. The route is built so the final stretch reaches the Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple given to Spain, in time for the sunset over the western skyline. Exact timing shifts with the season.

“A really big shout out to Pera who not only is an architect and a historian himself, but a proper actor. He took us through an incredibly informative tour and delivered some of the most dramatic stories with proper theater experience. If I can book other tours, I'll be sure to request him.”
“Truly enjoyed our time with Luke yesterday! We had a fantastic Free Walking Tour with him in Barcelona. He guided us through Passeig de Gràcia, showed us some of Gaudí’s most famous houses, and shared fascinating insights about the history and architecture behind each site. The tour also included the incredible Sagrada Família, and Luke's knowledge helped us appreciate its significance on a much deeper level. He was engaging, friendly, and extremely well-informed throughout the tour. He brought the history of Barcelona to life with interesting stories and details that we would have otherwise missed. Would definitely recommend Luke to anyone visiting Barcelona who wants an informative and enjoyable introduction to the city's landmarks and culture. Gracias!”
“We were in for two days visiting my brother who is currently studying here. We had a few hours spare so my brother found these walking tours. We didn't really know what to expect but it was brilliant. Our tour guide was Andreas for the Gaudi tour. He was genuinely nice, engaging and knowledgeable. We had a really good time and learnt so much. The tour did not feel as long as it did, the time flew by. 10/10.would recommend the tour with Andreas.”
“I absolutely love it when people are passionate, enthusiatic and knowledgable about what they do and this tour was no exception! Luke was lovely, genuine and answered all of our groups questions. I feel like I have gone away knowing alot more about Gaudi and the beautiful architectural history that has captured the curiousity and hearts of so many of those that visit Barcelona. I would highly recommend this tour to those visiting and send my thanks and gratitude for Luke for creating such a beautiful experience for our group. Another thing to note is Luke is also English, which is great for those wanting to learn English or have an experience with a clear English translation”
